MILLER-KEYSTONE ISSUES CALL FOR BLOOD DONORS

Miller-Keystone Blood Center has declared a blood emergency for the O-positive, O-negative, and A-negative blood types in our region. The Blood Center needs approximately 450 donors to walk through its doors daily in order to meet patient needs. These blood products are required to care for premature infants, trauma or burn victims, surgery or cancer patients.

Because of increased travel, family and holiday activity, combined with accidents and other illness, there has been a sharp decline in blood and platelet donations.

Even if you do not know your blood type, please donate! It is only blood donated that can save lives. The Blood Center urges those with a O-negative blood group to donate because it is O-negative blood that can be transfused to anyone in need regardless of their blood type.

Donating blood is safe and easy, and takes less than one hour. In order to donate you must be 17 years of age or older, weigh a minimum of 110 poounds, and be in general good health; they must not have donated in the past eight weeks. All donors are also required to provide valid identification; ID must have the donor's name printed on it, plus a photo and/or signature.

Please visit or make an appointment at one of the following locations:

  • Allentown: 1255 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Suite 1300
  • Bethlehem: 1465 Valley Center Parkway
  • Easton: Chrin Commons Building, 2925 William Penn Highway, Suite 105
  • Hazleton: 426 Airport Road, 4 Beltway Commons
  • Reading: 2745A Leiscz's Bridge Road

OPERATIONS CHRISTMAS CHILD

Kids in the Lehigh Valley area are learning something surprising about back-to-school shopping—it is not just a time to fill their book bags and closets, it is also a great opportunity to fill shoe boxes to help children in need around the world.

It may seem like an unusual addition to the annual back-to-school shopping spree, but through Operation Christmas Child families can make a real difference to a child in need by simply keeping the box from their new school shoes and filling it with small gifts. Operation Christmas Child plans to hand-deliver shoe box gifts to more than 8 million struggling children in 100 countries this year. An effort that massive means the project needs the help of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton families, not only during the holidays, but also right now.
Operation Christmas Child, a project of international relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, encourages volunteers to fill simple shoe boxes with toys, necessity items, school supplies, candy and hand-written notes of encouragement. The gifts are then shared with children worldwide who are suffering because of natural disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine and poverty.  For many of these children, the shoe box gift will be the first gift they have ever received, letting them know they are loved and not forgotten.

Why now—months before the holiday season?
Operation Christmas Child is not limited to just a few weeks a year. It is a year-round project, requiring months of organization and preparation to reach millions of kids around the world. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has distributed shoe box gifts to more than 77 million hurting children in some 130 countries

HOW CAN I HELP NEEDY KIDS WORLDWIDE? It’s Simple!

*              PREPARE—Help enlist families, churches, scout troops, community groups and businesses to take advantage of back-to-school sales by collecting discounted school supplies for shoe box gifts.
*              PACK—Fill shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items, hard candy and a letter of encouragement.
Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at www.samaritanspurse.org.

CLOTHING DRIVE

Companies are helping Via of the Lehigh Valley raise money for programs for children with disabilities in a unique way this fall. D&B and other Lehigh Valley companies are hosting clothing drives to benefit Via’s Children’s Services. Recognizing developmental issues and treating them early is vital in the growth of children. Via’s Early Intervention program works with infants and toddlers to identify and treat delays and include caregivers in the process so therapy can continue at home and be incorporated in the family’s daily routines. Early identification and age-appropriate therapies are critical to the well being of children with disabilities.
Via and local companies are collecting employees’ unwanted clothing for resale in Via Thrift Stores. Clothing can be in any condition, new, worn or poor. Items that cannot be sold in Via Thrift Stores because of tears, stains or missing buttons are sold on the international clothing market. Proceeds from the sale of donated items benefit Via’s programs for children, helping provide a bright and healthy start in life for children with disabilities.

Via Thrift Stores are located throughout the Lehigh Valley: Fountain Hill, the Westgate Mall in Bethlehem, and two new locations in Nazareth and the Parkway Shopping Center in Allentown.

To host a Via Clothing Drive, email
Via@ViaNet.org or call 484-893-5389.

For individuals interested in donating items, donations can be dropped at any of our Via Thrift Store locations or collection bins located throughout the Lehigh Valley. Call 610-866-6776 to schedule a pickup for larger items.

FOSTER PARENTS

Foster Parents are people just like you and me. They represent every race, religion and income level. They have houses in the suburbs or apartments in the city, have grown children, or children at home, or no children of their own at all. You could work with a foster parent or stand behind one in a grocery check out line and you’d never know-unless you asked them about foster care. Then you’d find out foster parents are very special people. They are key players on a team that really cares about children and families.

NHS Human Services wants you to be on that team too, by opening your heart and home to children in need.

For more information about foster care, please call 877-TFC-2210 or visit us on the web at

HOOK & LADDER

Hook & Ladder was founded on the mission of building a business while giving back to each community in which its beers are sold. Hook & Ladder and its wholesale partners provide donations to local burn centers and firefighter burn organizations through the A Penny in Every Pint® and A Quarter in Every Case® programs. A Quarter in Every Case® donates 25 cents from each case sold and A Penny in Every Pint® donates $4 from each barrel. These efforts have raised over $40,000 in the past 20 months alone.

Hook & Ladder’s mission-based venture gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “value-added.” The company is developing a new type of corporate responsibility – companies integrating philanthropic programs that are as fundamental to the business as the very products they offer consumers.

Rich Fleischer, a 15-year volunteer firefighter and head brewer for Hook & Ladder said, “In addition to selling award-winning beers, we’re also giving beer enthusiasts across the country a chance to give back to their local heroes in the fire and rescue service every time they pick up a Hook & Ladder brew.
That’s what sets us apart from other beers in this extremely competitive industry.”

UNDERAGE DRINKING

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is informing all of Pennsylvania about the dangers of underage drinking and the accessibility of alcohol to minors.

Research shows that kids are trying alcohol at younger and younger ages. The average age of trial is 12 years. Studies show that a majority of kids get their alcohol from home; it stems from parents, older siblings or friends who are providing the alcohol, or kids who are sneaking alcohol out of the fridge.

The goal of this campaign is to encourage parents, mentors and community members to talk to kids about the dangers of underage drinking, before it's too late.

You’d never give your kids permission to drink alcohol, but they may not have to ask. Across Pennsylvania, kids are drinking at younger ages. Be certain your children know that drinking is harmful to their health – and their future. It’s never too soon to talk.

Log on to
dontletminorsdrink.com for information and tips on how to make a compelling argument with kids about the dangers of underage drinking.
